  Frequently Asked Questions

Read through our most frequently asked questions by clicking on one of the questions below. One of them may answer any questions you have yourself.

  • Why should I buy Teakwood (Tectona Grandis) instead of other cheaper hardwoods on the market?

Teakwood is the undisputed preference for outdoor garden furniture. Its exceptional durability due to its high natural oil content ensures a life span of 30 to 40 years or more. There are numerous other cheaper hardwoods on the market, all of which are inferior to Teakwood.

  • Where does our furniture come from and how can I be sure it comes from managed plantations.

All our Teakwood comes from Central Java in Indonesia. As Teak is not an indigenous species to Indonesia and was introduced by the Dutch two centuries ago, the teak can only come from plantations, as there is no other source. There are a number of suppliers offering only Burmese Teak, which is unacceptable to us, as Burma (Myanmar) does not have plantations and cannot be guaranteed to come from replenishable sources.

  • How should I treat the furniture to protect it?

Unlike other hardwoods there is no need to treat Teakwood to protect it, as it is almost impervious to rotting due to its high natural oil content. As is the case with all hardwoods, Teak will gradually weather to a graceful silver grey appearance over a period of time, dependant upon the amount of rain, sunshine etc. Annual cleaning with a jet wash or a light scrubbing with warm soapy water and a capful of bleach will remove any accumulated grime.

Should this weathered appearance not be to your liking, periodic applications of Teak Oil will help retard the weathering process. However, it should be noted that the application of Teak oil will not extend the life of your furniture, and such treatments were developed to protect inferior timbers.

Teak Oil is not a permanent or long lasting application and inclement weather will wear it away. When applying Teak oil for the first time, you must ensure the wood is completely clean and dry; otherwise the wood may superficially blacken over time.

In general most people appreciate the zero maintenance aspect of weathered Teak and are delighted with the results when the full weathering process has taken place.

  • Do I need to put my furniture away over winter?

Bearing in mind the unsurpassed weathering characteristics of Teak, there is no need to store the furniture under cover, and it can quite happily be left outside throughout the whole year. An annual wash down before spring is all that is needed to refresh its appearance. Should you wish to prevent the accumulation of grime over the winter period, Regency Teak supply a complete range of high quality breathable Cushions for either individual pieces or full sets.

  • Why do occasional cracks appear on my furniture?

Teak being a natural material expands and contracts with changes in the weather, and in some cases fine hairline cracks may appear, especially in the end grain of the timber. This is a completely natural process and will not affect the lifespan or durability of the furniture.

  • Will the metal fittings on my furniture last as long as the wood?

Only high-grade solid brass, stainless steel and corrosion resistant materials are used on our furniture and as such will last the lifetime of the wood.

  • Do I have to assemble my furniture?

No, unless there are special delivery requirements, we will inspect and assemble all your items.

  • What happens if my furniture is stained by wine, oil etc?

Any stains, will with time, be eroded by the weather. Should you wish not to wait that long, you can scrub the affected area gently with soapy water, or for more serious staining rub with fine sandpaper until the mark disappears. Also any scratches, knocks or dents can be removed with sandpaper.

  • Why is there a significant price difference between some similar sized chairs and benches?

With an expensive wood like Teak the raw timber is initially sold to the manufacturer based on cost per cubic metre. Therefore the thickness and weight of wood used will have an influence on price.

The shape and design will also have an influence on price as any furniture that has curves, like a lumber support etc, has been cut from solid wood and consequently more wood and labour has been used. Generally speaking, chairs and benches with straight backs and flat seats are considerably cheaper to produce than more elegant designs.

  • I have heard some suppliers talk about hand made Teak furniture. Is this better than machine made?

Absolutely not! Purchase this furniture at your peril, and be aware that many garden centres and stores do stock this type of furniture.

It is produced in primitive conditions using inferior glues to fill the gaps in the joints etc. Large amounts of filler are used to conceal gaps in the wood that wash out within the first few weeks of outdoor use. As water gets into the joints and destroys the glue, the whole assembly of the piece becomes unstable, until it can eventually fall apart.

This type of furniture is almost never kiln dried.

  • I have heard people talk about dried wood. Is this important?

Very. In order for finished wood to remain stable through the changing climates, it is essential that the individual components be placed in a special Kiln that gently removes the excessive moisture from the raw wood. This process can take between 3 to 6 weeks depending on the thickness of the wood, and will prevent the warping, twisting and cracking associated with air-dried timber, where the wood is simply left outside under a canopy for a period of time.

Almost all cheaper versions of Teak garden furniture are only air-dried timber, whereas all Regency Teak furniture is kiln dried, with the moisture content being checked at various stages.

  • Will the joints last the lifetime of the furniture?

All Regency Teak furniture is precision machine made using Mortise and Tenon joints with teak dowels and Epoxy Resins for extra strength and durability. These types of joints are recognized as being the undisputed preference of high quality furniture manufacturers, and give the furniture the strength required to withstand the rigours of outdoor use.

  • How will my furniture be delivered?

Unless there are special reasons for doing so, your furniture will be delivered fully assembled and placed in position by our own in-house knowledgeable deliverymen, who can advise on all matters regarding your furniture.
