  Why Teak?

image: Perum permutani Only the highest quality materials are used by Regency Teak including the highest grade of teak wood from the best plantations in Central Java, Indonesia. These sustainable plantations created by the Dutch almost two centuries ago are now owned and managed by the Indonesian Government.

The Indonesian Forestry Dept - "Perum Perhutani" stringently control the cutting and replanting programme thus ensuring not only a constant supply of mature logs but providing considerable local employment. Genuine Teak (Tectona Grandis) has a naturally high oil content which is almost impervious to extreme weather conditions and naturally resilient to rotting over a period of many years.

For many centuries teakwood has been the mainstay of ship building and marine constructions such as wharves and docks etc. There are many fine examples of Teak benches in our parks and gardens which are well over 50 years old.

Over the last 150 years teakwood has become the most sought after and prestigious timber for outdoor garden furniture. Regency Teak guarantee to only use wood sourced through the Perum Perhutani plantations.

Due to its high natural oil content, teakwood requires no maintenance. If left untreated it will weather to a graceful silver appearance. Alternatively it can be oiled to provide a rich golden tone which does require periodic re-application. As the case with all hardwoods, minor hairline cracks may appear, especially in the end grain, which in no way affects the furniture's strength and durability.

Quality & Craftsmanship

When using a highly durable wood such as Teak, it is essential that any metal components used in the furnitures construction are of a similar durability. Solid brass fittings and stainless steel are used to ensure trouble free maintenance and operation whilst complementing the wood's natural tones.

In order to withstand the rigours of European weather, it is essential for the teakwood to be kiln dried to reduce the moisture content to levels which prevent warping and twisting. All wood used by Regency Teak has undergone this process.

Our manufacturing partners specialise in a highly skilled and expensive cutting operation of the Teak logs to ensure a "straight grain” appearance to the finished article. This straight grain and even colour enhances the furniture's natural beauty. Only furniture of the finest quality can boast of this much sought after straight grain effect.

Final inspection and finishing of all the furniture is undertaken by skilled craftsmen at our Cheshire site which is open to inspection at any time.
